It was founded by Sir Dr. Abu Zafar Mahmood, a politician living in New York, an international relations researcher, and a brave freedom fighter of Bangladesh. Sir Abu Zafar Mahmood, the president of the organization, was born in Sandwip, an island town in the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. He ventured into politics from childhood with the aim of serving and rehabilitating people affected by disasters. During the great liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971, he fought bravely against enemy soldiers as a mountain battalion commander. Later, in the nineties, he migrated to America, where he has continuously worked on world politics alongside serving people and advocating for their rights.
In 2023, Abu Zafar Mahmood formed People United for Progress to play a role in advancing political rights and social development.
On May 3, 2024, People United for Progress commenced its journey with the people through a colorful ceremony in Jackson Heights, New York. Early in the campaign, the organization officially endorsed New York State Assembly members Jessica Gonzalez Rojas and Steven Raga.
